About the Artist

My name is JW Grimes (Wade).  I am an Abstract/Contemporary artist based in Houston Texas.  I began painting in 2008 by emulating many techniques used by Jackson Pollock and Wilhem de Kooning from the 1940-1950's.   In 2008, I watched the movie "Pollock"  and became fascinated with techniques he used to produce his unusual new style of art. Pollocks art inspired much of what I paint today.

Since my work is abstract, I love to hear how each piece is interpreted by each viewer. I am fascinated by how every persons own unique life story comes out in what they view in each piece. My own emotions and events from my day and life forge each piece, and your life helps interpret it. Fascinating!

Like Pollock, I have tried to build a new style of painting that has its own unique look to it. I continually experiment with new paints and other items I can add to make my works as much a conversation piece as they are simply beautiful.

My tools of the trade are not what you might expect. A traditional painter uses a brush and palette knife. I tend to use Cut up rags, Cut Burlap, Syringes and my favorite....  Turkey Basters!  Each tool gives me a unique way to apply my medium in new ways to create something that it completely original and thought provoking.

Often an inspiration for a painting or new style I use comes at odd times.  I have found that during rest or relaxation, that the creative side of my brain does its best work.  I have been asleep and suddenly woke up from a dream with the perfect idea.  Off to the studio I go to get down on canvas what my brain was showing me in my dream.  The shower is also another place that I often come up with answers to ideas that I am struggling with.  I also find that just sitting down with a blank canvas with no preconceived idea lets me relax and the painting usually paints itself.  When I am done with the piece, I often take a step back and say "Wow..  Where did that come from?"

I hope that when you view my artwork that you see a little into your own life and some of mine as well.
